Flash Fiction – 10th Ed.

I had a spare moment or two to do some flash fiction today.  This is the first time in a while as I’ve been swamped with all kinds of things to do.  The picture provided is Keck Observatory in Hawaii, but of course I had to add a science fiction twist to this as usual.

The rules are simple: create a 100-word (more or less) work with a general plot.  Include the photo with an appropriate citation, because that’s what cool folks do.

Big Hit

“Insertion vector within normal parameters,” the system announced in my helmet.

I stared at the bright, white snow.  With little effort, I saw New Hampshire, deep in February.  At times, the clouds would roll over the granite mountains just like this.

“Deceptive,” I said.

“Huh?  What’s that?” my colleague, Jin asked.

“It looks like home,” I answered.

“That’s carbon dioxide snow,” she reminded me.

I sighed.  “Yeah, but maybe not for long.  The asteroid will strike in an hour.”

“And we’ll get our water,” she said.

“Yeah,” I agreed, “home sweet Mars.”

I stared at the horizon and waited.
