Flash Fiction – 10th Ed.

I had a spare moment or two to do some flash fiction today.  This is the first time in a while as I’ve been swamped with all kinds of things to do.  The picture provided is Keck Observatory in Hawaii, but of course I had to add a science fiction twist to this as usual.

If you want to participate in the Friday Fictioneer activities, head over to Rochelle’s Purple Blog and check out her stuff.

The rules are simple: create a 100-word (more or less) work with a general plot.  Include the photo with an appropriate citation, because that’s what cool folks do.

Big Hit

“Insertion vector within normal parameters,” the system announced in my helmet.

I stared at the bright, white snow.  With little effort, I saw New Hampshire, deep in February.  At times, the clouds would roll over the granite mountains just like this.

“Deceptive,” I said.

“Huh?  What’s that?” my colleague, Jin asked.

“It looks like home,” I answered.

“That’s carbon dioxide snow,” she reminded me.

I sighed.  “Yeah, but maybe not for long.  The asteroid will strike in an hour.”

“And we’ll get our water,” she said.

“Yeah,” I agreed, “home sweet Mars.”

I stared at the horizon and waited.

  1. I thought it looked like New Hampshire too! Mt. Washington specifically. This was really good. The best part of it was “home sweet Mars.” It says a lot for three words.

  2. Good sci-fi story!

  3. Fun stuff! I’ll forego the ranting this time around. I love the idea of a planet covered in dry ice that looks like New Hampshire in February.

    All my best,
    MG

  4. Home sweet Mars.. I like that.. Great to be there when it’s finally done.

  5. I see I’ve given you the Sci Fi bug. Nice work, Rants.

  6. What a cool little story, and all based on a photo… I’ve never heard of flash fiction, but based on this introduction, I’m hooked!

  7. Yep. If we want to colonize Mars, we’ll need water for many things. Throwing a comet at it might be the most efficient way to get the water. Well thought out and well written. Great work!

  8. Hmmm….Verrry interesting! And well done. 😀

  9. Dear BrainRants,

This reminds me of some of the sci-fi flicks my brother dragged me to when we were kids. Nicely done.

    Shalom,

  10. “Home Sweet Mars” made me sad.:(

  11. I too like ‘Home Sweet Mars’ though I’m not a sci-fi fan usually, I have to say I liked this take on the prompt. Well done.

I thought I had replied already… I really like this. Interesting idea with the asteroid.

  13. Carbon dioxide snow…is it the yellow snow my mother warned me to avoid?

  14. It reminds me of an A.C. Clarke story. A planet with 5 suns. So sorry if I’m off base.

  15. Good sci-fi, Brainrants. Great dialogue. Well done. 🙂 — Suzanne

  16. Nice job Brain! Clever dialogue and wonderful SciFi details… as someone who love NH, I appreciated that detail too. 😉
